The Lowndes County Historical Society was founded in 1967 as a non-profit corporation, charged with preserving the history of Valdosta and Lowndes County. The Society has extensive collections of documents, photographs, and artifacts acquired by donations.  The objective of the organization is to promote an interest in local history, to collect and preserve documents, pictures, and artifacts pertinent to our cultural heritage, to maintain a museum for the preservation and display of cultural objects to promote and encourage historical  and genealogical research.

The archives are open to the public for use by researchers, interested persons, groups and organizations. The Society holds educational quarterly meetings.  We hold an annual social event, and publish a monthly newsletter for the members.

The museum offers tours, including a slide show, to school groups and other interested people by appointment.   The slide show details Valdosta and Lowndes County history and development and lasts 30 minutes.

Library/Archives

In our library we have extensive collections of genealogical resources as well as books and photographs about Valdosta, Lowndes County and its people and places and surrounding counties.

We have access to a database of recordings such as birth, marriage, and death through a unique program called GENDEX which was donated to the museum.

The Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Admission is free.

We are located at 305 W. Central Ave. in the former Carnegie Library Building.
